I suspect that the only place that indeed features ammo-box panniers is your faulty memory, Richard… I did have a beer crate on the forward carrier, though. Sometimes.

Exploring the countryside by bike is great -- it's amazing just how far you can get in an hour or two, let alone a day. With hindsight I agree with you, cycling up the steady slopes of a Vosges mountain is relaxing. (Of course we've yet to discover just what a hors catégorie feels like.) My legs still remember Porlock Hill, which I rode up earlier this year. I was contemplating having a crack at the Exmoor Beast this year (the route sensibly avoids Porlock Hill). Alternatively, somewhere through Wales. Have you any ideas?

I have a pic of us about to set off from Sarn Helen that morning; after that I misloaded the fillum in the camera and so have no further records, boo. I’ll see about uploading the pic

Ah, the Devil’s Corkscrew, bliss. You should blog that, if you can summon up the memory. It might be worth saying that cycling uphill is easier without two crammed metal ammo boxes as paniers. Got a picture of that?
